I've stumbled across an interesting tidbit of inforation regarding Kings
Quest 6, SBOS, and the Thunderboard.
Before i had internet access, i was trying to play Kings Quest 6, with
SBOS. I didn't have any lists of parameters that work with what, so i
was on my own. But, what i tried, rather than mucking around with SBOS
paarams, was configure kq6 to use the Thunderoard. It worked perfectly,
and i got digitized effects, when i didn't when it thought i had a SB.
This raises a couple of questions.
1) Why did it work with the Thunder Board. I always thought it was
IDETICAL to the SoundBlaster. Isn't it? Or did they just write it's
drivers better, with more lee-way?
2) Does this work with other games? I've not tried it yet, so tell me
if anything interesting comes up.
3) What other questions does this raise?

is it possible that you have not disabled a game port in your computer?
the midi box hooks up into the dual joystick port (game port) at the back
of the gus, and it is possible that windows is finding two devices at the
joystick port while it's trying to take control of that port... if
that's the case, that could be the source of your lockup

I would recommend anyone planning on registering Mega-Em hold off for a
while (yes again). Gravis and I have been doing some talking and there is
a definite possibility Gravis will have distribution rights to it. So to
prevent any unnecessary tension please be patient for a little while.
Currently registered users are probably wondering 'what about me ?'. Well
I'll figure something out when I know exaclty what is happening.

Hello,
Does anyone know the price of Gravis' MIDI connector for the GUS? As long as
I'm at it.... where would I find this information out for myself so I don't
have to ask again?

Be careful how you fill out this order form! It defaults to 256K, for
$10. I filled it out to ask for 256K*3, and included the extra money.
Over a month ago I received 256K, with a line on the order slip saying
it cost $30 for 1 unit! Mattew @ Gravis has been very friendly
discussing the problem with me, but still no refund or extra 512K.

I get exactly the same results. On the previous version of the gravis sw,
(2.05?) I found that it was related to SBOS. I haven't messed with the problem
under 2.06, but what I found before is that if you DON'T run sbos, then
windows won't crash. Note that running the sbos -remove option (I don't recall
what the actual option is, just the one that is supposed to remove sbos)
Doesn't help. IE power cycle the machine, don't run sbos, (or probably any
other ultrasound progs Except the autoexec.bat and config.sys stuff), and go
straight into windows, you may not crash.
My synthesizer puts out midi active sense bytes (Yamaha DX7). It constantly
sends these bytes to say "I'm here, I'm here..". I guess that when windows
is loading up the gravis drivers, these unwanted midi in messages cause
a midi in interrupt, before the interrupt handler is ready for it.
You will probably find that you can leave the midi box plugged in,
but disconnect the midi from your synth and have no crashes. I would be
curious to find out, so give it a try and pass on the results..
My home made midi box has a 1 of 4 input select switch, that I set to
an unused input when booting windows. It's a bit annoying cause every once
in a while I forget, then windows crashes on startup, making me panic for
a minute. I reported this one to Gravis when 2.05 was in vogue..

Actually, I have a friend with a SBPRO and comparing the GUS (with SBOS2b10)
with the same game (ie. wolf3D) there is only a slight difference in the SBPRO's
favour. ie they both sound rather poor. So IMHO the FM emulation is quite good,
the problem lies in that FM as used by the SB is quite poor. The results may vary
with games but no-one really believes a SB sounds good, do they ;-)

If you sampled that FM synth at 16 bits/44kHz then you would find they'd sound
identical, that's the advantage of wavetable synthesis. Yeah I know where's the
16 bit daughtercard? Well some well endowed MIDI studio owner sampled it for us
on his $3000 sampler.

I don't know about the other game, but I've got GUS and Xwing and I've been
trying to make the two work together for a long time. The problem isn't
with the soundcard, but the memory. The game has trouble running the
digital sound and speech effects -- even with 6 Megs of EMS, the game still
freezes momentarily when you fire or a tie-fighter flies by too close. The
only way I've found to stop the freezing is to press escape, go into the
control panel and turn off the digital sound and digital speech. That kinda
sucks, I know, but you shoot a lot more tie-fighters.
Hope that helps,
Jerry Steele
